Thumbs up Segway Chat Awards 2006: The Nominations

Hi all

On behalf of Florin, Will, Sal and myself, this post contains the official nominations for the Segway Chat Awards 2006.

The nominations are based on your suggestions and by each judge digging deep into their memory and searching back through posts made between 1-Nov-2005 and 31-Oct-2006. Where possible, we've drawn up a list of 5 nominations for each category.

Take a look and please discuss which member you feel is most deserving of each award. All of your comments will be taken into consideration but the judges' decision is final.

We will announce the winner and runner-up in each category on 31st December 2006. You have until 25th December to post your comments.

REMEMBER: The Members' Choice Award is still open for voting. Vote for your overall favourite member here.

Most Informative/Detailed Post: Awarded to the member who posted the most informative or detailed message. Nominations:
  • bystander. Examples of his attention to technical detail can be found... in every single post he makes! Here are a couple: 1, 2.
  • glen_d for some great SC posts and some great links back to his own website with specific "how to" articles. Examples: 1, 2, 3.
  • GyroGo for his detailed thoughts concerning the creation of a generic term to represent Segway PTs. Thread.
  • SegwayDan for his detailed plans on a SegSeat model for the i2. Post.
  • Neelix for his SegCast messages - in particular, the i2 special video edition which was one of the first user videos of the i2 to air. Thread.
Most Political Post: Awarded to the member who most fiercely voiced his/her opinion in any political subject. Nominations:
  • Buckaroo Banzai for lots of "Off Topic" posts, in which his politics are never hard to find. Some examples: 1, 2, 3.
  • Desert_Seg for Steven's detailed response and subsequent follow-ups on the "Radical Islam's War against the West" thread.
  • KSagal. As the current President of SEG America, it seems that politics are never far from Karl's posts. Examples: 1, 2.
  • RC Mike. Although now banned, he could always hold his own. Example.
Funniest Post: Awarded to the member responsible for causing the loudest laugh (intentional or otherwise) or the best display of wit. Nominations:
  • mrleisure for his story on the thread "Your strangest encounter". Post.
  • macgeek for his "Heard on a segway" post. Post.
  • ElectraGlide for his post in the "Wife or Segway?" thread. Post.
  • Florida Ever-Glides for his laugh out loud bell ringing post. Post.
  • Mr_Laurenzano for his post turning the tables on attacking dogs. Post.
Most Helpful Post: Awarded to the member who displayed the best evidence of being *very* helpful towards another member. Also open to dealers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Nominations:
  • bystander for his frequent and accurate trawling of the SC search engine. bystander is often there to present help in the form of links to previous discussions of interest. Examples: 1,2.
  • sholloway for keeping the forum (and some of the other dealers, it would seem) up-to-date with info from INC regarding the much delayed i2 accessories. Thread.
  • plo for his efforts to purchase and break up XTs so as to provide much needed spares for members. Thread.
  • luckie for tirelessly posting literally dozens of Seg-related news items in the News forum. Example.
  • toybuilder for creating the iButton programming software and releasing it for free via his announcement on Segway Chat. Thread.
Curmudgeon Award: Awarded to the member who regularly demonstrates crusty, irascible and cantankerous tendencies! Nominations:
  • Florida Ever-Glides. Flying the flag for Segway with his tour business - but, he's not always Mr. Positive! Examples: 1, 2.
  • JohnM. He doesn't even own a Segway! To be fair, he offers the perspective of an adamant cyclist - but can't help the occasional dig! Examples: 1,2.
  • terryp. Although Terry has had his fair share of problems with his Segway, no one seemed more anti-gen2 - until he got one of course! Examples: 1, 2
  • Stewbonz. A vendetta? You decide: 1, 2.
The Huh? Award: Awarded to the member who posted the most off-the-wall, random or just plain weirdest message. Nominations: Most Flamboyant Signature Award: Awarded to the member with the biggest/loudest/most impressive signature. Nominations:
  • JaredHT for the biggest and boldest signature on Segway Chat. Examples:
  • Tanner for his custom animated GIF.
  • macgeek for his creative handy-work (as explained here)
  • yosgof for his custom "from walk to glide" image.
  • Timezkware Tim for his custom picture showing his Mets coloured Segway - three times just for good measure!
Most Original Avatar Award: Awarded to the member with the most interesting/different/meaningful avatar. Nominations:
  • macgeek for his MacOS versus Blinky custom-made avatar.
  • Desert_Seg for Steven's apt use of the grumpy character from Disney's Snow White.
  • GlideMaster for the famous gliding... squirrel... rodent? Classic!
  • inventor for the picture of his beautiful partner.
  • JohnM for what looks like Albert Einstein riding a bicycle.
Most Outrageous Pimping Award: Awarded to the member posting evidence of the biggest, scariest, custom-made modifications to their Segway. Nominations:
  • macgeek. Pimp My Segway. Need we say more? Examples: 1, 2.
  • KSagal. Monster Segway! Examples: 1, 2.
  • Zorba9. Zorba9's "Wild Thing" has been wild for a while, but thanks to a post by Bystander in July 2006, the evidence of outrageous pimping can be squeezed into this years award. Post.
  • slide4less. Segway of Oakland's custom-designed Segways and accessories continue to amaze! Although the pictures are hosted externally on their SegwayJunkYard website, they've been posted enough on Segway Chat to qualify: Post.
  • glen_d for his charge port flipping alternative. Post.
Most Useful Segway Pimping Award: Awarded to the member who posted details of the most useful accessory/modification (not manufactured by Segway). Nominations:
  • Isidore for his post on an I2 aftermarket bicycle product, ideal for attaching to the seg. Thread.
  • joe for his fender extension ideas and templates. Thread.
  • maran747. In in 2005/06, maran747 (Mario Raneses) released his final production version of the SegSeat. Whilst the initial post is outside of the Segway Chat Awards time frame, the actual release of the product wasn't. It is therefore included as a valid nomination. Thread.
  • glen_d for his InfoKey cover idea and templates. Thread.
  • KSagal for his "KETTS", Karl's Enhanced Traction Tyres. No longer available but loved by those lucky enough to get hold of a pair. Thread.
Please note that "The Huh? Award" and the "Strangest Post" have been combined into one award.

What a great list! So many great choices, I'm not sure how to pare it down to vote! How do you want the voting done? Via email or PM to one of you specifically? i.e., is it supposed to be public (via this thread) or private?

I do want to say that RC Mike is only banned at his request. He was placed on moderation for a while and subsequently chose to leave the forum, first asking that I remove all his posts (which I refused to do) and then he wanted to be banned - I didn't understand it, but was willing to do at his request. In my book, if he wanted to return, he could....

Default Thank you's

I'd like to thank Will, Florin, and especially Gareth for all the time and effort it took to organize these "ceremonies."

I certainly hope that people will find them as fun and nostalgic ;-) as I did.

Hi Sal,

I notice you have changed your avator, I know, you want to win next year

It's a nice one, but it does make me dizzy when I look to it for some time.

Hi Pam, to be clear, voting for the Members' Choice Award should be done via the link in my original post. This sends a private e-mail to Sal, who is collating the results. All other recommendations should be posted here, in this thread.

Thanks

Default Sorry to be so confused...

I'm still confused. Isn't the members choice award separate? How do we vote for the individual categories mentioned below, or do we? Do we send an email to Sal? What are the recommendations that you mentioned? I thought the recommendations ended when you got the lists together under each category. Since the original thread is locked, it might be good to compile the voting directions here, including the link to Sal for the Members' Choice.

Default Remove my nomination

Please remove my nomination for "Most Helpful Post". I understand that some people appreciated my efforts, but I also know some folks really resented my frequent updates. For that reason, I shouldn't be in the running...also my esteemed fellow nominees for the award deserve it far more than me.

Now if you'd had a "Most adept at diverting the thread's topic to polo" or a "most likely to talk about something outlandish and then carry through with it" award, I'd happily stayed in the running for that! 8^) 8^) 8^)

ps - Also my organizing efforts probably would have been better spent at the postal auction. I hate to think of how much we all lost combined because we didn't coordinate our bids.

Hey Plo, Just because some people may not agree doesn't mean you shouldn't be in the running. I don't know how Gareth, Florin and Will feel, but I personally think you should remain in the running.
